With chapters like “Paddle Meets a Sawmill” (will Paddle end up as paneling on someone’s cabin wall?), Holling generates enough suspense to keep a kid awake on a Sunday afternoon, if not all night. Each chapter is a merciful single page of text with black and white illustrations, and on the facing page are gorgeous, painstakingly accurate, and exciting color illustrations on the facing page.Įxciting? You’d better believe it. The rest of the book narrates the adventures of the little wooden figure as it travels from its launch point on the north side of Lake Superior, through each of the Great Lakes, and down the Saint Lawrence River. No matter how often I read it, I never tired of the story of an indigenous Canadian boy who carves the figure of a man in a canoe and names him “Paddle-to-the-Sea.” He adds some metal along the canoe’s keel to keep him upright and on course, paints the boat and the little guy, and on the bottom of the hull carves the instruction “Please put me back in the water / I am Paddle-to-the-Sea”. I read it when I was in high school, college and more college. I read it when I was less little, and still less little. Someone in the family received the book as a gift when I was in elementary school, so I read it when I was a little kid. I literally grew up reading Holling’s Paddle-to-the-Sea. McCloskey’s formidable Make Way for Ducklings. His Caldecott Honor recipient (again, a runner-up) was the 1942 masterpiece Paddle-to-the-Sea, which was edged out of the top spot by Robt.
As it is, he had to settle for Newbery Honors (the runner-up’s prize) for Seabird (1948) and Minn of the Mississippi (1952). Holling came within swinging distance of both the Newbery and Caldecott medals, the children’s literature equivalents of the Heisman Trophy and the Cy Young Award.
